Confident Introductions

Introducing yourself in eight steps, so that the person you meet remembers your name.

About the course

A one-day workshop that teaches one thing and then makes you practise it: standing in front of someone you have never met and saying who you are. Eight steps, each rehearsed in pairs, and once in front of the room before the day ends.

Syllabus

8 Step

  1. 01

Make your own introduction clear and short

Your name, your role and what you work on — presented briefly and plainly.

  2. 02

    Open with a genuine smile

“A person without a smiling face should not open a shop.”

  3. 03

Speak with your eyes on theirs

Eye contact is the strongest single signal of confidence you have.

  4. 04

Remember the name, and use it

“A person's own name is to them the sweetest and most important sound.” Carnegie called it the magic in a name.

  5. 05

    Use open body language

How you stand, what your hands do, how close you are — all of it speaks before you do.

  6. 06

Show real interest in the other person

“What do you work on?” — questions of that shape carry a conversation.

  7. 07

Let the other person feel important

“Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.”

  8. 08

Build the confidence by rehearsing it

Confidence is not a temperament; it is what repetition leaves behind. The rest of the workshop is spent on it.

What you leave with

  • A thirty-second introduction you can give without having to think about it.

  • A reliable way to start a conversation with someone you do not know.

  • A working habit for remembering names.

Who it is for

Students, job seekers and young founders — anyone who regularly has to stand in front of people they have not met.

What you need

Nothing. You do have to take part, though; sitting and watching will not do it.

Facilitator

LL.M in International Economic and Trade Law, Brunel University, UK; trainer with the BTSP (Bond Teacher–Student–Professional) movement.

The organisation's own handout, drawn from Dale Carnegie's “How to Win Friends and Influence People”.
